Haudenosaunee Lunch & Learn
October 16 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Mamaway Wiidokdaadwin Life Promoter’s invite you to join us in learning the teachings of Haudenosaunee Line Work Anthology with Shillene Dale.
What is Haudenosaunee Line Work Anthology?
Anthology of Haudenosaunee Line work is tattooing that has been a part of the Haudenosaunee culture for millennia. Each nation has its own variation of the line work much like our languages its similarities among each nation with slight variations. You could distinguish between hunters, runners (messengers) and planters (gardeners) by the tattoos they had. As colonial influence increased, the practice of tattooing evolved into bead work and we hid our stories within our regalia & other crafts.
During this workshop, this evolution will be described. The symbolism and meaning for the broader definitions will be broken down. At the end of the class the participants will build there own stories in linework based on the symbolism taught.
- Shillene Dale (McNaughton) is of the Onondaga Nation, Beaver Clan from Six Nations, ON and grew up travelling Indian country learning from various elders & knowledge keepers. Learning languages and longhouse traditions has always been her passion. She’s spent the last 10 years teaching culture to those who never had her opportunities to learn. Her long term goal is to one day be fluent in the Onondaga language and her primary goal is to dissuade pan Indigenous teachings because our Indigenous cultures are unique to each nation in beautiful ways. “Just because something is different doesn’t make it wrong.”
A light lunch will be provided.
