Our Name & Who We Are

Mamaway Wiidokdaadwin comes from the vision of seeing many people around an individual as support to hold them up with their hands. The support people come from many backgrounds, ages, nations and types.

Together, their hands help keep the individual straight and tall; standing up in a positive way with the help of others.

We are providers of wholistic health care and wellness programming that incorporates Indigenous culturally grounded, collaborative health care to residents of North Simcoe and Muskoka.

Our Name Creation

Our Beginnings

Seeing the increase of Indigenous peoples moving into urban areas like Barrie and Orillia, we saw that many did not have a family doctor, nurse practitioner or a primary care team to help them along their health journey.

We strive to address the lived cultural, environmental, social, economic, political and spiritual needs that are essential to the individual, family and communities’ well-being.

Our Goal

With the help of various partners in North Simcoe County and Muskoka regions, Indigenous peoples and their families can access health services that support their unique emotional, physical, mental and spiritual health. We aim to expand our Primary Care services, improving access for vulnerable groups across the Simcoe Muskoka region.

Our Governance

Mamaway Wiidokdaadwin is managed through the Barrie Area Native Advisory Circle, with advice and direction provided by the Indigenous Health Circle – ensuring that services develop and remain grounded in traditional and local practice according to the evolving needs of our communities.

Family Focus

We know that family is highly valued in our Indigenous communities and while our programs and services will enable care and support for individuals, they will be built to foster and encourage family participation.
